Do northerners think all southerners sound like hicks?
Because i get that idea from impressions on TV. especially in louisiana and texas and all those deep south states. i admit a lot of people from louisiana have that cajun accent like from new orleans and stuff. We get a lot of people from the north where i live and they always make fun of our quotaccentsquot. and i know we also have really white trash people who actually do sound like that haha

NO.. nor do those of us in the WEST.brbrA Southern Accent of which there are roughly divisions thereof isnt itself quothickquot... though the media certainly can push that stereotype by linking the accent with poor grammar.brbrI grew up in Northern California where we have no accent ltwinkgt, and then spent quite abit of time in the Florida Panhandle and around Mobile Bay with the US Navy... accents from Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, TexArkana, Alabama. Not to mention sailors and airmen from New Jersey, the various New York Boroughs, Minnesota, Maine, Vermont, and worst of all.. BOSTON !! I spent months in Tennessee, and later another months in Virginia.brbrIm a former US Naval Aircrewman and Officer... I then taught History for years... and am now a quothillbillyquot rancher and substitute teacher in the GoldCountry of California. We have some hicks and hillbillies up HERE... not so much their accent, but their poor grammar and ignorance.
